LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The pandemic has caused stress, anxiety, and in many cases bad eating habits. But one local chef says it doesn’t have to be that way.
A meal prep business in Las Vegas is finding some success at a time when many traditional restaurants are struggling.
Chef Andrew Pro works in a kitchen, just not his kitchen.
This kitchen commissary is home to chefs like him working in the mobile food industry who are carving out their own niche as COVID-19 is hitting the traditional restaurant business hard.
“Serving healthy meals for people is just something we’ve had a goal of. We just hope that people enjoy our food when they get it,” chef Pro said.
For more than a year Pro has been operating his meal prep business The Good Life.
He says his business is prospering.
“I think people want healthy choices or a healthy alternative even if it is just one meal a week you know or excuse me one meal a day,” Pro said.
On his website, customers can order individual meals or buy into weekly subscriptions ranging in price from $395 for four weeks to $700 for eight weeks.
Chef Pro fully cooks the meals then packages the meals to be delivered and reheated by the customer.
During his time in town, he has worked with some of Las Vegas’ top chefs.
“I was eventually a sous chef for Wolfgang Puck, Emeril Lagasse and just recently I was a sous chef for Gordon Ramsay at Paris Las Vegas hotel-casino,” pro said.
He left the restaurant world in April 2019 and was slowly building his business when the pandemic hit – which left more people staying home and eating more meals at home.
Pro says people are stressed out and so dieting is more important now than ever.
“I mean we have to go back to the basics of the food pyramid as we were taught as a kid. To stay away from sugary foods, meat with added sugars, processed foods, and really go back to whole foods,” he said.
