O’FALLON, Mo. (KMOV.com) –
An 8-year-old from O’Fallon, Missouri is probably the youngest chef cooking and eating healthy.
Deesten Lewis, who likes to go by Little Chef DJ, has been cooking since he was 5 years old.
“My mom put me in the kitchen,” he said. “I use directions and sometimes I come up with stuff on my own, like sometimes I ask mom like, ‘what can I make?’”
He’s a little shy in person, but when you put the guy in the kitchen, he captures your attention. He says he loves eating and cooking healthy food options. Most of his recipes are vegan based with no meat.
“Vegan macaroni and cheese, and Yogurt Parfait,” said Lewis.
Those are his two favorites to make. He says he uses math and science to get the perfect measurements to make his meals
North County is considered a food desert. Food deserts, according to the USDA, are defined as areas without fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthy whole foods, usually found in impoverished areas. This is largely due to a lack of grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and healthy food providers.
As a partner of Healthy Schools, through Missouri Foundation for Health, Little Chef DJ is changing lives
“Seven to 8 years old, who actually is taking the initiative with healthy eating and healthy cooking is phenomenal. I think that other young people need to see this young man,” said Phedra Nelson, a community wellness director.
For all of the other kids out there wanting to maybe become a chef, Chef DJ has some advice: “Ask dad and mom to get in the kitchen and start cooking and say, ‘I want to do this, that, and that stuff. ‘“
