LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — While we are following the guidelines from the health professionals, one Lexington based counselor says the masks could be anxiety inducing for some.
It’s been over a month now that Kentuckians have been healthy at home. As more businesses start to open back up and people are wearing masks in public, Dr. David Maynard, a Lexington based counselor, says that for some, the changes can be anxiety-inducing.
“Being aware of what it is that we are experiencing internally. Then pushing ourselves, you know, just a little bit, to get out and be around other people and don’t allow that feel to hold us back at the same time,” Dr. Maynard said.
While wearing a mask and practicing social distancing in pubic, there are ways we can still be connected with others, like verbally greeting people.
“There’s a lot that can be gained, there’s a lot to be gained, there’s a lot that we can understand when we hear someone’s tone of voice. We know what their intentions are,” Dr. Maynard said.
Dr. Maynard says some anxiety isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The anxiety stays in the forefront of your mind and helps you stay aware of what you’re touching.
It could be the opposite, Dr. Maynard says, for people who are antsy to leave their homes.
“They may not be mindful of washing their hands, or oh yeah, I’ve got to put the mask on. So I would encourage those people to be mindful on that front.”
