FROM magic diet pills and intermittent fasting books to toning trainers and vibrating slimming belts – there’s hundreds of weight loss products on the market.
And as an overweight 31-year-old mum-of-two, I’ve tried most of them.
I’ve always struggled with my size, but this year I reached my heaviest weight yet – 14st 8lbs – and feeling my size 18 jeans were getting too tight, I knew I needed to take drastic action.
I had an addiction to sausage rolls and crisps and would gorge on freezer meals I made for the kids – mainly fish fingers. At the weekend we’d treat ourselves to a greasy takeaway from the local kebab house and my exercise regime was non-existent.
Pushing a size 20, I’d cover up in jeans and baggy tees – and you’d never catch me with my legs out.
I’ve tried extreme low calorie diets like the Cambridge Plan and been to hundreds of intensive HIIT workouts – but nothing has ever really worked for me long-term.
Feeling more lethargic and bigger than ever in January this year, I started looking for new weight loss products and diets online.
But reading about women who’d shed weight by intermittent fasting – a diet where you refrain from eating for extended periods of time – or seeing celebrities like Caroline Flack losing 8lbs plus in less than a week at trendy bootcamps just made me feel rubbish.
Working full-time in PR and looking after my kids, Rebecca, six, and Thomas, three, meant that those options were just not feasible for me.
A fat-burning headset
One day I was browsing through social media when I came across a video about Modius – a revolutionary high-tech headset that guarantees amazing weight loss results – fast.
The headset comprises of two jelly-like nodes which you attach behind your ears. These are used to transmit messages via a nerve to the Hypothalmus – the part of your brain which controls appetite, metabolism and temperature.
These electrical impulses then trick your body into a state similar to when the body exercises, causing users to burn more energy and lose their appitite – thus for forcing your body to burn more fat.
Neuroscientists claim that by wearing the headset users can expect to lose 8% of their body fat in just four months.
I wanted to give it a go – but at £369 it was well out of my price range.
I thought about it for a few days and read reviews online. I could see other mums like me had had tried it and their weight had dropped off, so I decided to buy it- if it helped others, maybe it could help me shift my stubborn weight too…
Shaking it off
A futuristic-looking headset arrived in the post a few days later.
When I told my friends what I was doing they all thought it was a bit mad and too good to be true. It made me wonder if I’d fallen for a clever advert.
Then I worried it might be dangerous to attach nodes to my head.
I decided to man up. I’d bought it now – it was time to give it a go.
I read the instructions and it said all you had to do was attach two nodes to your scalp behind your ears and then turn on the vibration and weight loss would begin. So I pressed the button and put it on.
At first I thought I was doing it wrong. The buzzing made me feel seasick and sent a tingling sensation through my skull.
I hoped it would pass but after 5-minutes it was too much and I turned it off.
Reading the instructions again I saw that if I downloaded the Modius app I could set the headset at a lower level to make it more comfortable for me.
So, I tried again, careful not to get the electrodes (a sticky pad that conducts electricity) caught in my hair, and found that the setting 4 or 5 was pleasant enough.
It was never painful, but the zap of the current was something that took a bit of getting used to. I was able to keep working at my desk, with a slight buzz in the background.
I was amazed by how quickly the results began to show. Within a week I had lost 2-pounds, the next week I dropped the same.
I wasn’t eating healthier or exercising, so I knew the results were from this headset.
I never wore the headset outside of the house, but I made sure I wore it for an hour a day – which is the maximum time you can use it in any 24-hour period.
And after 12 weeks I lost 8lbs and dropped a dress size. The other mums in the playground couldn’t believe how different I looked – and I must admit, I enjoyed getting so many compliments.
Dr. Kam Singh, Gina's GP says:
“While Gina may have lost some weight through the device, it’s always best to stick to diet and exercise, and if you have a significant amount of weight to lose it might be worth making an appointment with your GP to see if you can benefit from their advice.”
