Another business is getting ready to take the place of Sue’s Coffee House in St. Clair’s Riverview Plaza.
Port Huron resident Emily Marriott said she heard about the coffee house’s closure earlier this year and visited a girlfriend in St. Clair. Now, she’s hoping for a mid-June opening for Simply Fresh Café in the coffee shop’s former home at 201 N. Riverside Drive.
“We had talked in the past of opening something together,” she said. “I made a simple phone call to the realtor and the ball started rolling.”
Now, five weeks after that April 3 phone call, Marriott said she is ready to put a personal passion for healthy eating into use. She has a background that includes corporate professional jobs and some time in the restaurant industry. More than that, she said she has “had a love of cooking my whole life.”
Her Simply Fresh Cafe will offer a variety of smoothies, juices, salads and wraps or sandwiches, including vegan, keto and gluten-free options.
Marriott said she wants it to be both a take-out and sit down-friendly place but with a new atmosphere.
“We’ll have the free WiFi for the public, and we’ll have sitting places along with dining tables,” she said. It will mean a change in décor — with a “bright, sunshiny beach-type feel.”
“I’m all about palm trees,” Marriott said, laughing. “Just something friendly and bright.”
Marriott said she had visited the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County about developing a place with this concept in Port Huron.
But she said that idea fell to the wayside — until now.
“(Sue’s) was just perfect location, perfect timing,” Marriott said. “And everything’s just been falling into place.”
Down the road, she said she would like to convert Sue’s wine bar in the back of the cafe into a smoothie bar.
First, though, Marriott said she wants to get her feet wet and “see where we’re at with customers and feedback.”
In the winter months, she hopes to offer cooking classes.
“I do want to do some nutritional cooking classes,” Marriott said. “… I believe in nourishing, healing your body with food. That’s really what I would like to do. That’s my vision — is nourishing the community.”
