These simple, healthy caramel apple nachos are a surprising delight! The sauce contains just three ingredients and is not only dairy free, but also vegan, allergy-friendly, and optionally paleo-friendly. It’s a perfect nutritious treat or sweet snack for kids or adults, and can be customized with your extra toppings of choice.
I discovered this wholesome, caramel-like sauce from Sarah at The Fit Cookie. She used it to make these amazing Caramel Cookie Dough Ice Cream Sandwiches for our #FrozenFridays Recipe Contest. Those vegan, gluten-free frozen desserts are definitely delicious, but I was truly smitten by the “Caramel” Layer. It’s so simple, and yet so addictive. It doesn’t taste just like caramel, but has definite caramel notes that add just the right flavor to these healthy caramel apple nachos.
I’ve only used natural sunflower seed butter to make the caramel topping below. However, cashew butter will probably work well, too. Almond and peanut butter will also work, but they may be a little too pronounced in flavor.
Special Diet Notes: Healthy Caramel Apple Nachos
By ingredients, this recipe is dairy-free / non-dairy, egg-free, gluten-free, grain-free, nut-free, peanut-free, soy-free, vegan, plant-based, vegetarian, and top food allergy-friendly. You can also make it refined sugar-free and paleo-friendly if you use a seed butter with no added sugars. However, I prefer to use a regular sunflower seed butter, which has just a touch of evaporated cane sugar.

- Arrange the apple slices on a plate, or just toss them on.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the seed butter, maple syrup, and vanilla until smooth.
- Drizzle or spread the seed butter caramel atop the apples. If it is too thick, warm it for 10 seconds in the microwave and whisk.
- Sprinkle on any optional toppings, if desired.
