The Atkins diet is a low carbohydrate diet plan created by American physician and cardiologist Robert Atkins.
Many have compared the Atkins diet to the popular keto diet, which is also a low-carbohydrate diet plan.
But which is better for weight loss? Popular in the early Noughties, the Atkins diet has recently enjoyed a resurgence of popularity.
This is in part due to its regained celebrity following – Kim Kardashian admitted to following the diet to shed her baby weight.
Meanwhile, Sharon Osbourne is said to have lost 23 pounds on the diet.
What is the Atkins Diet?
According to the Atkins UK website, the low carb diet plan is based around four phases.
These include: induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and maintenance.
The induction phrase allows very little carbohydrates, while the later stages allow you to begin re-introducing some “good” carbohydrates into your diet.
Like the keto diet, one aim of the diet plan is to put your body into an initial state of ketosis.
“When you go low-carb, your body goes into a metabolic state called ketosis and begins to burn its own fat for energy to fuel your daily activities,” explains the website.
What is the keto diet?
The keto diet is a low carb, high fat diet, according to the Healthline website.
You are also allowed moderate amounts of protein as part of your diet plan.
Just like the Atkins diet, the aim is to get your body into a state of fat-burning ketosis.
What is the difference between the Atkins diet and the keto diet?
According to Everyday Health, it is all to do with the amount of protein you eat.
The website explains: “One key difference between the keto diet and Atkins is the amount of protein you’re allowed to take in.
“There’s no cap on Atkins, while keto limits protein to about 20 percent of your daily calories.”
The keto diet also involves maintaining a state of ketosis throughout the diet period, which is achieved through severely limiting carbohydrates long-term.
In contrast, on the Atkins diet you can reintroduce carbohydrates, which brings the body out of the ketosis state.
For those dedicated to following the keto diet, there is one food that will help you to stay full. Eating eggs will help you stave off hunger on a keto diet, nutritionist Jenna Hope explained.
She said: “Eggs are high in protein and healthy fats which take longer to break down and digest therefore keeping you fuller for longer.”
